Your sponsor button will be shuffled so that it will move around within the sponsor's box so that each one will receive prominent placing at different times.

From one of my sponsors, when I asked her about being a sponsor:  

...the total number of hits directly from your blog - 350.  I was seeing anywhere from 20 - 30 hits a day from your blog site.  The day you pinned one of my items, I had over 150 hits from Pinterest alone.  And from facebook about 300 hits.  The pin and facebook posts made a big difference - more than doubling my usual hits for that day and I saw sales that day and for a couple more that were out of the ordinary.  

My unbiased opinion is that the pins and facebook posts are more effective than the sidebar advertising.  People came and looked from the sidebar advertising but the numbers were about 10% of my normal hits from etsy and I didn't see a difference in sales.
